THE SKYWALKERS
"Our vision is unlimited!"
ACADEMIA
Mrs. Beauregard, Mrs. Giorgio, Miss Gray, Mrs. Pleau, and Mr.
Kahn
In Mrs. Pleau's social studies class
students are expanding their knowledge of map skills. They are also becoming aware
of how important The Five Themes of Geography are in our everyday lives. As an
extension of our social studies curriculum, Legacy, a drama discussion group
visited us on October 1st. This was an enrichment activity for our students.
The Legacy actors will be visiting us again in November.
Students are currently presenting their Five Themes of a
Natural Disaster project.
They will begin working on their land form creations in
November. Mrs. Pleau is expecting excellent results after the fantastic Natural
Disaster projects!!
In Mrs. Beauregard's classes, students are beginning to focus on
their upcoming
Science Fair projects. Students' Seven-Tasks-Projects are
currently being presented
in class. The results have been impressive!
Mr. Kahn's math classes have been working with stocks and bonds
during period 5.
Miss Gray's Language Arts classes are working diligently on their
writing workshop projects on Thursdays and Fridays. The students are interviewing
each other as an extension of our biography/autobiography unit. Recently we began
our rain forest/environment unit. We are reading the novel One Day in the
Tropical Rain Forest by Jean Craighead George. Our reading also consists of
articles from a variety of texts on the rain forest. In conjunction with the rain forest
unit the Skywalkers will enjoy a presentation by Dr. Gale Goodwin-Gomez, a professor at
Rhode Island College, on her experiences in the Amazon rain forest. Mr.
Jonathan Mancini, an environmental management expert, will share information with
the Skywalkers about how our actions effect the environment we live in.
The Skywalkers adopted the theme "Lend-A-Hand" for their first interdisciplinary team unit. The students will study a variety of community, local, and global issues that affect their lives, and the lives of those around them. Socratic Circles will serve as a vehicle for students to gain an in-depth look at "The Struggles We Face" as a community, a nation, and as a world. After studying a variety of issues the Skywalkers will devise a plan of action to help others in need.
In September the Skywalkers made 100 signs for the Bill Pires First Annual 5K Memorial Road Race. The students worked extremely hard for two weeks carefully planning and making signs and an amazing banner. Mr. Edward Pires, son of the late Bill Pires, and Mr. Jonathan Mancini, Vice-President of UST Corporation, and Environmental Management Corporation purchased all of the materials for the students, and treated them to a pizza and soda party for their hard work. Miss Gray and two of the Skywalkers participated in the road race---nice job boys!!!
October has brought oodles of canned goods to the Skywalker
classrooms! Our food drive has been quite successful in years past and continues to
be an overwhelming success!

HOMEWORK--POLICY/TIPS
The students should have approximately 2 hours of homework per
night. They should have no more than 30 minutes per subject/per night. The
students will have several long-term projects to complete this year. The Skywalker
teachers factor in the amount of time spent on these projects when assigning daily
homework. However, it is the responsibility of the student to keep abreast of
deadlines and to practice time management skills. It is not advisable to leave
long-term projects until the last minute.
