II. E. Security
Buildings and Grounds
Buildings constitute one of the greatest investments of the school district. It is in the best interest of pupils and taxpayers to protect that investment adequately.
Security means more than having locks and being sure that they are locked at the proper times, security also means, but shall not be limited to the following:
1. Minimizing fire hazards
2. Reducing the probability of faulty equipment
3. Guarding against the chance of electrical shock
4. Keeping records and funds in a safe place
5. Protection against vandalism and burglary
The superintendent of schools is directed to establish such rules and regulations as may be needed to provide for security in the sense outlined above.

Equipment Security
Although the West Warwick School Committee realizes that there is no absolute protection against the unauthorized removal of equipment from schools, building principals should take steps to secure all such equipment.
The following steps should be taken to reduce the loss of equipment.
1. No equipment shall be left in an unlocked classroom.
2. All equipment shall be stored in a locked closet or storeroom every night.
3. The media center, where a substantial amount of audiovisual equipment is stored, is to be locked when a media staff member is not on duty.
4. All equipment removed from the media center shall be charged out by a media staff member. In the absence of said staff, the principal may:
a. personally charge out the equipment and software, or
b. not allow any equipment or software to be charged out.
5. Under no circumstances shall a principal allow individual staff members to charge out any equipment or software to leave the building unless the following conditions are met:
a. the equipment and related software may only be borrowed over a weekend or school vacation,
b. the teacher has demonstrated the ability to properly utilize the equipment and software,
c. the teacher assumes full responsibility for replacement or repairs to the equipment and/or software if lost or damaged while charged out to the teacher,
d. the teacher will be responsible for the transportation of, and the return of said equipment and software to its proper location prior to the start of school the first day after a weekend or vacation,
e. all software must have a back-up located in the school prior to borrowing,
f. all equipment and software will be utilized in accordance with all copyright laws and regulations relating thereto,
g. the teacher must sign a statement of responsibility prior to borrowing said equipment and software.
