III. E. Substitute Teachers
A substitute teacher shall be a person fully qualified to instruct in our schools and who is employed for short periods of time in the absence of the regular teacher because of illness or professional duties.
Suitable means of assigning, orienting and evaluating the work of substitute teachers shall be provided by the professional staff under the direction of the superintendent.
Rates of compensation for substitute teachers, long term and short term, may be set by the school committee and in conjunction with the West Warwick Teachers Alliance where applicable.
Substitute teachers shall be appointed annually or as necessary by the West Warwick School Committee upon recommendation of the superintendent. Such election of substitute teachers shall take place prior to the opening of school in September.
The revision and current maintenance of substitute teacher lists shall be accomplished as necessary through the office of the superintendent of schools.
The superintendent or an agency contracted by the West Warwick School Committee shall be responsible for the daily appointment of substitute teachers. The superintendent shall be further responsible for reporting any emergency action to the school committee at the next school committee meeting.

Central Bureau
The West Warwick School Department shall provide the services of a central substitute bureau for the procurement of certified teacher replacements for West Warwick teachers absent from their respective schools on a short-term basis.
