III. O. Political Activities
The school committee recognizes that employees of the school system have the normal right of any other citizens in the community -- to associate themselves as candidates, supporters, workers, or adherents with any legally recognized political party or with any group of citizens engaged, in political activity designed to modify, improve, or enhance the educational, social or economic welfare of the community. The same rights may be exercised by associations representing employees in our individual schools or in the school system, even in respect to school committee elections and school revenue issues.
The exercise of such rights by teachers as detailed above shall be conducted according to ethics of the profession so as not to affect adversely the ability of teachers to carry out the tasks for which they are employed.
It shall be the function of the superintendent to work out with the association(s) any details concerning the implementation of this policy and any details concerning the use of school property (such as auditorium) for political activities. Any agreements reached between the superintendent and the association(s) representing employees shall be presented, in writing, to the school committee for approval.
