Plant Life

There are many different plants in the rain forest. Some of the plants include vines, bromeliads, the passion fruit plant and the Victorian water lily. Vines in the rainforest can be as thick as the average human average human body and some can grow to be 3,000 ft long. Strong vines will fall and take the tree down with them. The bromeliad can absorb up to 12 gallons of water at once! The passion fruit plant will mimic butterfly eggs so that butterflys will not lay their eggs there and the babies won't eat its leaves. The Victorian water lily can grow upto 8 feet across.

The bangle bamboo is another plant of the rainforest. This plant can grow 40 to 80 feet tall and three inches in diameter. It has dark green stalky columns for stems and narrow green leaves. The bangle bamboo is a type of grass, the largest and fastest growing grass. They flower once in their lifetime before they die. The bangle bamboo species lifespan is 25 to 40 years.

The strangler fig is one of the most important species in the rainforests ecosystem. Hundreds of animals feed on the sweet fruit that is beared several times a year. The strangler fig can grow upto be 148 ft tall. This plant survives by sending a large amount of roots into the host tree encircling it, so they fuse together. When the roots grew thicker thew would cut the trees flow of nutrients. Soon it robs the tree of sunlight and the tree eventually dies.

The giant tree fern is another plant in the rainforest. There are several different species of the tree fern. This tree fern is large growing to a height of 15m with a 30cm thick trunk. The trunks are mostly patterned with oval scares left by falling fronds. The fern cannot produce secondary timber, which means their trunks cannot get bigger.
