Creating an EED (Environmental Enrichment Device)
Go to www.mote.org/~hughbuffett/pages/Help/help3.eed.phtml
I. Background Information: Read about the Environmental Enrichment of Manatees and how to make a manatee toy. Also browse through the nine toys listed on the site. This will ensure that you don’t design a toy that they already have. Mote Marine will choose toys that are both suitable for manatee use and UNIQUE! Use that information to answer the following questions which will come in handy when you create your toy!
1. Why is making EED’s for manatees so challenging?
2. What are the five rules that you must follow when designing an
EED?
3. When looking at all of the toys, what do manatees do with most of
them?
4. When looking at the materials for most of the toys, list the strong
items that were used to make acceptable toys. This will help you when
you need to list materials for your own toy.
II. Rough Draft and Ideas – Two things must be completed before you can work on your final color diagram of your EED.
A. You should first sketch out an idea in rough draft form of your
toy. There doesn’t need to be a great deal of detail, this is just
to help you brainstorm.
B. Secondly you must provide a description of your toy in the
following areas. Once a teacher has approved your description and rough draft you will begin your final copy of your diagram. Your description will only be approved when it is thorough and complete. Your chances of having your toy chosen are improved by being clear, specific and persuasive. Do this work on the Description Sheet provided to you in complete sentences.
C. Once your description is complete, you must create a final diagram
on typing paper. This paper is necessary so I can scan them when I return and send the ideas to Mote. You should fill up most of the paper with your toy and show how a manatee would use it. Neatness and good color choices will only improve your chances of being selected! Good luck! I cannot wait to see you ideas when I return.
EED Description Sheet
A. Description of the Toy – In this section you must include a creative name and a detailed description of what your toy will look like. You also need to assure the reader why it meets all of the safety requirements listed.
B. Why Manatees Will Enjoy This Toy – Include a description of how manatees will play with this toy and why it is suitable for them based upon facts about manatees in the wild. Be convincing here and persuasive!
C. Supplies Needed – This may be in list form with numbers. Be sure your supplies are strong. Use your notes from the web site for ideas.
D. Building Directions – These can be step-by-step complete sentences that are numbered much like the supply list. Basically they want to know how you envision your toy being build and how it will stay together.
