Ashton Student Takes Prize in National Contest!
We would like to congratulate John W. (JW) Frampton, first grade student at Ashton School, for receiving the Top 10 Award in the 2005-2006 Braille Readers are Leaders contest. Braille Readers are Leaders is a national contest sponsored by the National Federation of the Blind, designed to increase Braille Literacy.
Braille is a tactile form of literacy. Configurations of raised dots are used to create letters, numbers and other symbols. JW has been learning
how to read Braille for less than a year, and his accomplishments have been remarkable. We are very proud of J.W.
JW read 1,449 pages in Braille over a 3 month period. Most of these books were leveled books used in the Guided Reading program.
He accomplished
this with support from his teachers, Mrs. Sale and Mr. Field; his paraprofessional, Mrs. Cunha; his Teacher of Children with Visual
Impairments, Mrs. Heidi Henshaw; and his parents.
J.W's award consisted of two certificates, two ribbons, a check for $25.00 and a very special t-shirt. He is also being recognized with a citation at the State House.
Congratulations to J.W for your achievement, as well as as for all your hard work!
