Career Discovery What is a Vocational Evaluation? A vocational evaluation is designed to help a student become aware of their skills, abilities and vocational interests. This is accomplished through computerized, hands-on and paper and pencil tests. Each student’s evaluation plan is individualized and based upon the student’s previous experiences and future goals. What is the Community Based Evaluation? Once the initial evaluation is completed, some students are allowed to "try-out" a job in their chosen field of interest. The student experiences what it is really like to work in that field. These community assessments usually last 20 hours. (Some students are eligible for extended work experiences in the community. These experiences can last up to six weeks. This can happen during the summer.) An evaluator accompanies the student to the site to observe the student and provide any assistance that might be necessary. What can a student expect during the evaluation? Each student will have an evaluation specifically designed for him or her. It will combine the specific experiences, interests and needs cited by the student, teachers and parents. The plan, once determined, could include one or more of the following elements: Interest Inventories, Skills Assessment through Standardized Testing. What is the purpose of a Vocational Evaluation? Vocational evaluations not only help the student understand their interests and aptitudes. It also helps teachers and other educators to develop an education plan best suited for each individual student's needs and goals. The purpose of the evaluation is to coordinate an education plan and supports necessary to facilitate a successful transition from school to work. Who is eligible for an evaluation through SORICO? Eligible students are between the ages of 16 and 21 who have been referred to the Office of Rehabilitation Services. How can a student be easily referred? Referrals may be made by teachers and guidance counselors. The referral is made to: The Office of Rehabilitation ServicesOnce the referral is made, an initial meeting will take place to determine eligibility, the best evaluation plan and to share information pertinent to vocational planning. Upon the completion of the evaluation, these same people will meet to discuss the outcome of the evaluation period.
