Reading Recovery Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term literacy intervention for first grade children having extreme difficulty learning to read and write. For an average of 12 to 20 weeks children receive daily, one-to-one, 30 minute instruction by a specially trained teacher. Reading Recovery serves as a safety net for the lowest-achieving children and is a supplement to a good classroom program. During this intervention most children make accelerated progress, develop effective reading and writing strategies and meet grade level expectations in reading and writing. Reading Recovery can also serve as a pre-referral for a small number of children who will need longer-term support. History of Reading Recovery in Rhode Island Reading Recovery was developed by New Zealand educator and researcher Dr. Marie Clay in the mid-1970's and it began in the United States in 1984. In 1990, New Zealand tutor Sandra Iversen trained the first class of Reading Recovery teachers in Rhode Island. Since that time, hundreds of teachers throughout Rhode Island have been trained and thousands of first grade students have benefited from this intervention. In September 2003, Rhode Island Reading Recovery was established as a result of a merge of three existing centers: East Bay Educational Collaborative, Southern Rhode Island Collaborative and the Woonsocket School Department. Reading Recovery Outcomes Reading Recovery collects performance data on all children served, even those who receive incomplete interventions. Overall, 64% of all children served by Reading Recovery in Rhode Island in 02-03 successfully met grade level expectations in reading and writing. Sixteen percent of the children served were recommended for further assessment or consideration for other instructional support after receiving a full program of 20 weeks. Approximately 20% of the children did not receive a full intervention. Among children who received a full series of lessons, 80% of the lowest-achieving first grade students successfully reached grade level reading proficiency. No Child Left Behind The Rhode Island Literacy Initiative supports K-12 literacy programs aimed at improving the quality of classroom instruction while providing extra support for those students who need it (Rhode Island Reading Policy, p. 1). Alongside good classroom instruction, Reading Recovery teaching accounts for each learner's needs and systematically builds proficient skills for reading and writing. Children engage in reading and writing continuous text in order to become strategic problem-solvers. Reading Recovery includes:
Reading Recovery teachers meet “highly qualified teacher” requirements as they participate in continuous professional development. Teachers must be knowledgeable and flexible as they constantly refine theory and practice.
