     They hunted whales for baleen, spermaceti and other whale oils and bones. They used spermaceti for burning lanterns and candles. The spermaceti was the cleanest burning oil known on Earth at that time. The spermaceti was found in a sack in the whale’s head.  Baleen at the time was used for other things. It was not oil, and was found in the whale’s mouth. It was used for whips, springs, umbrella ribs and other products because it was very flexible.
