Teaching
your child's school team about TS and TS Plus
|
Most
teachers and school staff are unfamiliar with TS, just as you were before your child was
diagnosed. Just as you have had to learn a lot to support your child, your child's
educators will need your help in learning your child's special needs. There is no
"recipe" for teaching a child with TS. Every child's needs are different and
what may be true in one grade no longer may apply in the next, both due to a child's
maturation and the nature of tic disorders. Some children have just tics, but most have
some "other parts" of TS, the co-morbidities of Attention Deficit, Obsessive
Compulsive symptoms, Anxiety, or learning differences. (These "other parts" are
called "TS Plus".) Even the co-morbidities can change from year to year.
Symptoms can and do wax and wane, or come and go.

about TS and develop a plan appropriate for your child. Click on the following menu

A booklet for teachers: "It's Not Just the Tics: Learning and Behavioral Issues with Tourette Syndrome"
This 19-page booklet explains TS, tics, ADHD with tics, OCD, and behavior problems along with strategies for working with these behaviors. Oppositionality, inflexibility, irritability, explosive anger and short fuses are explained to teachers and other school staff in the context of TS and TS Plus. It describes successful strategies that stress teaching self-control rather than "punishment". Linda R. Abbott, RN, MSN, Barbara Baron, PhD and Louise S. Kiessling, MD wrote this booklet so that parents would have a tool for educating the school team. It is illustrated by drawings by members of the children's support group of the Tourette Syndrome Association of Rhode Island. It is full of examples of why children with TS and these co-morbidities may struggle with behavioral issues and how to figure out what is "too much". It includes a discipline or plan for teaching self-control where both the child and a supportive adult work together to solve problems as they arise.
